In 1979 and 1980, a group of well intentioned Mensans led by Ms Sakina Kagda made an application to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to register Mensa (Singapore). Unfortunately, this initial application was turned down and nothing more was made of it.

It was not until March 1987 when Mr Edward Vincent, then Executive Director of Mensa International (MI), visited Singapore before any further efforts to register the society were brought up again. Mr Vincent conducted a talk entitled “Mensa Talks and Test Sessions” and subsequently invited Singaporean members of Mensa International to a follow up cocktail party. During the party, held at the Hilton Hotel on 19 May 1987, he announced his intention of setting up a local Mensa chapter and asked for volunteers. Two gentlemen, Mr Narinderpal Singh Bhalla and Mr Kannan Chandran came forward and began to form the Protem Committee which aimed to get Mensa (Singapore) registered.

Over the next few meetings, other interested Singaporean members of MI joined the Protem Committee. The office bearers were Mr Bhalla (Hon. President), Mr Chandran (Hon. Vice President), Ms Daphne Wong Hsiao Ya (Hon. Secretary) and Mr Chen Fei Wei (Hon. Treasurer). Dr Gerald Wong, Mr Adrain Tan, Ms Bernadette Chung, Mr Thomas Yeo, Mr Toh Kok Seng, and Mr Steven Ong formed the rest of the committee.

While the Protem Committee had various concerns such as selecting an appropriate psychologist to conduct testing and obtaining funds for publicity, the priority centered on drafting the constitution to suit the requirements of both MI and ROS. With funding from MI, Lee & Lee Solicitors were engaged to guide the Protem Committee in the application to the ROS. This was done because the committee was not very familiar with the requirements and practices in the ROS application process.

On 3 January 1988, Mr Chandran informed the meeting that Mr Bhalla had stepped down as Hon. President because he was leaving permanently for Canada. The Protem Committee then elected Mr Chandran to take over from Mr Bhalla as Hon. President. During that time, Mr Png Kim Chiang also joined the committee. The Protem Committee submitted a formal application to the ROS to register Mensa (Singapore) in March 1988 and after waiting for more than a year, the determination and perseverance of the early founders finally paid off. Word arrived on 28 May 1989 that Mensa (Singapore) would become a reality.

Amidst the general jubilation, a decision was made to launch the society in a grand manner, with lots of activities to create interest and awareness, and to coincide with the inaugural general meeting. Again, with financial support from MI, advertisements were placed in the New Paper and the Straits Times to invite the public to take the admission test and join Mensa. On 15 October 1989, these initial test sessions began at Braddell Primary School, and the rest as they say, is history.

Mensa Singapore conducts the Mensa Singapore Admissions Test (“MSAT”) for persons aged 14 and above to see if he or she qualifies for membership. The MSAT involves symbols and pictorial representations, and does not require knowledge of any particular language or mathematics. It is not the type of test that candidates should practice for, nor can he or she improve their result by taking the test repeatedly. However, you can try several sample test questions of the MSAT here : Test Sample.

If your child is below 14 years old, and you wish to admit your child to Mensa, you need to bring your child to any qualified Psychologist for a test such as the WISC-R test. If your child has undergone similar tests before, you may submit those test results to Mensa for consideration. Upon receiving of your report/test results from the psychologist, kindly forward it to Mensa Singapore. If the result meets Mensa criteria, we will revert to the parent/applicant submitting the test results/report. This is how Mensa Singapore presently accepts younger children to join the society.

Information about fees, testing schedules and availability are available at Mensa Singapore’s website, as well as directly from the Mensa Singapore office. At this present time, the MSAT is conducted monthly at Suntec City in the city center and costs S$55 per person. Special testing sessions are also conducted several times a year at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University for their students.

Important notes about the MSAT:

This test is to be used solely for qualification for membership in Mensa Singapore and should not be used for any other purpose.

Mensa uses a percentile as cutoff for membership to avoid confusion due to different numerical scores from different tests. Therefore, your results will be presented as a percentage and not a numerical score.

You cannot practice for this test nor can you improve your result by taking this test repeatedly. Candidates are not allowed to take this test more than once within a 12-month period.

If your result is within the top 2% of the general population, you will be invited to join Mensa Singapore. During the test, your proctors and testing officers will also be able to tell you more about Mensa.

Mensa Singapore treats the test procedures and all results to be private and confidential. Candidates can expect to receive their results within 3 to 8 weeks.

Mensa Singapore was registered in 1989 and is recognized by Mensa International to be one of only twenty countries worldwide to qualify for full National Mensa status. There are currently over 3,000 Mensans in Singapore, and growing. Mensa gives you a chance to meet people of like minds that you might normally not get to meet. Our Junior Mensans have a wide range of activities designed to stimulate their young intellect and increase their social skills. There are also many opportunities for teenage Mensans and those in their 20s to be proactive in participating as well as organizing their own activities.
