The Settlers of Catan competition will be held this Sunday 25th July 2010 outside the National Library. Mensas who join will be given a special entrance fee of $6 (instead of $10). Latest registration date/time is 845am on 25th July onsite.

The first prize is a 4D3N trip to Germany.

Chill & Chat Venue back to Settlers Cafe Central from June 2010

After experimenting with an alternative venue last month, we will be moving Chill & Chat back to Settler’s Cafe Central once more. All future Chill & Chat sessions will be held there. The time for the session has extended, from 12pm to 6pm.

Visit Mensa Singapore Booth @ Mind Sports Festival 2010

Mensa Singapore is collaborating with The Mind Cafe to hold a boardgaming carnival this month. Admission to each game at the carnival will be by voucher and winners for each game are entitled to a sure-win lucky dip.

200 gaming vouchers will be given away to Mensa Singapore members on a first come first served basis, limited to a maximum of 2 vouchers per member (Valid Mensa Singapore membership card needs to be produced to redeem the voucher).

Come down and collect your vouchers at the Mensa Singapore booth! You may collect anytime between 10am to 10pm over the three days. The boardgaming carnival managed by The Mind Cafe will only start at 7pm on each day.

Additional gaming vouchers can be purchased from The Mind Cafe at $2 per voucher.

Play different board games with the vouchers and winners can win prizes in lucky dip.

Mensa members whose membership has lapsed will be able to renew their membership at the Mensa Singapore booth. Members of the public who wish to register for the Mensa Singapore Admission Test are also able to reserve their slot at the Mensa Singapore booth. Only cash transactions will be accepted. Official Mensa Singapore receipts will be issued. Please request for the receipt at the booth.

Mensa Singapore Ambassadors Wanted!

We are seeking 10 Mensa Singapore Ambassadors to station at our exhibition booth (right at the entrance of the mall) over the three days, to introduce Mensa Singapore to the public, and to promote our society to interested parties. Public who are keen to register for the test may proceed to the registration counter at the other end of the Atrium managed by our committee. Members whose membership has lasped could also do so.

We need volunteers to fill 3-hour time slots over the three days, and you may contribute as little as 3 hours or as many as you wish. As an appreciation for your effort, we will award a Certificate of Achievement for your involvement together with a A4 Executive Notebook (worth S$45) and some other sovenirs at the end of the event.

Talk Synopsis : Raising Money for your new venture

Do you have a new business idea that you think will take the world by storm? You’ll need money to get it off the ground. Pick up tips and insights on how to do this from seasoned entrepreneur Moh Hon Meng.

He’ll share with you the experiences of how he has done this in the past, and how he is doing it again now for a new venture that he is launching. Come prepared with questions, especially if there is a new business that you are planning for right now, so that you can benefit in a more relevant way.

About the Speaker : Moh Hon Meng

Hon Meng worked for multinationals such as Procter and Gamble and DDB Worldwide before striking out on his own 10 years ago to co-found iFAST Corporation Pte Ltd with CEO Lim Chung Chun. iFAST operates the well known unit trust website Fundsupermart.com, and the largest investment platform for financial advisers in Singapore, known as iFAST Central. In its first year, iFAST succeeded in attracting many prominent professionals as investors, as well as corporate investors such as Singapore Press Holdings and DMG and Partners Securities.

Today, iFAST has 270 staffs and operates in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and India. The business has won many awards, but most notable were the 9th position it attained in the Enterprise 50 awards of 2007, and the 2nd position it achieved in the same awards presentation in 2008.

Hon Meng became a non-executive director in January 2010, so that he has time to launch a new venture. He still serves in iFAST Corporation in the following capacities:

1. Non-executive member of the board
2. Chairman of the audit committee of the board (which oversees the corporate governance, risk and compliance behaviour of the company).
3. Chairman of the board for iFAST Financial India Pvt Ltd, the joint venture between iFAST Corporation and Deutsche Bank in India.

Hon Meng is also an acclaimed author and award winning playwright. He has been published by Simon and Schuster, Heinemann, The National University Press, Martin and Elliot, and Resonant Publishing (a publishing company which Hon Meng started). He has won prizes for 4 of the plays he has written including two 3rd prizes in the Hewlett Packard-Action Theatre 10 minute playwriting competition series and a commendation prize in the National Book Development Council Book Awards. He recently released a new book entitled “Why Stock Markets Always Rise … and other stories for financial success” in March 2010. This is a compilation of the investment articles that he has written at iFAST Corporation over the last 10 years.

In his new venture, Hon Meng is teaming up with an enterprising young man, a graduate from Stanford University with a Masters in Engineering, to launch a new web enterprise. He is looking for more passionate people to join his team.

Hon Meng is 42 in 2010, and is married with two boys, aged 9 and 6. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1992 and is a member of Mensa.

Mensa Accounts and Migration of Mensa Email Accounts

We have recently undergone an exercise to integrate and migrate the Mensa accounts for all our active members (those with valid and non-expired membership).

All members will get a Mensa account which enables them to:

1) access our new social network
2) have their own Mensa email account
3) share documents and files with other members
4) receive our monthly Mensa newsletter (which goes out at the start of every month)

All active Mensa members would have received an email with your userid and password to access your new Mensa account. You will need to login here to complete your setup and change your password immediately:
